🔴THE BLOODY CAESAR🔴 — This is a polarizing one for sure. For me, it’s the drink that started it all. It stemmed from a predilection for salty savoury things that I share with my dad. Growing up, I’d watch him make caesars for himself. One day around age 11, I got the nerve to ask for one (he made it virgin, obviously). He let me try it, failing to mention that Clamato has clam juice in it. I was by no means vegetarian, but I wouldn’t eat fish until well into university. I LOVED it. It was like the best spicy meal in a glass I’d ever had. My friends thought I was weird. I just knew what I liked. Much to the chagrin of my parents, I inhaled them. Perhaps they saw into the future, me guzzling beers or something. •

Another time at 16, I was out for dinner and a movie with a group of friends in “the city” (a west suburb of Ottawa called Kanata). I think it was Jack Astor’s. The waiter was taking everyone’s orders and I asked for a Caesar. I was expecting they would card me or say “virgin?” When they didn’t, I giggled proudly, thinking I’d gotten away with something. Of course they brought me a g-d Caesar salad 🥗. My friends never let me hear the end of that one. I sincerely just wanted a Bloody Caesar. •

Flash forward to adulthood. I’m still loving my Caesars. Early on in our relationship, Paul was initiated into the Caesar world by my middle brother, during one of his visits to Toronto from Australia. Paul’s Normand upbringing calls to mind bread, cream, butter, beef, calvados—NOT savoury spicy clam drinks with insane garnishes. Still, Paul drank the whole thing. Though he never drank one again, he set out to perfect making it at home, for my sake #truelove


Lately I’ve been making it a little different every time. I’ve fully switched from Mott’s to natural, preservative-free Clamato mixes from waltercaesar or singerscaesarmix. Sometimes: a couple barspoons of horseradish and some filtered olive brine. Or I dose it with extra dashes of Worcestershire sauce and a dash of celery bitters. But a few things never vary: Always cracked black pepper on top. Always inhaled. Always nostalgic. •
